Destination Details

Best Time to visit:

Ladakh is open for tourist throughout the year, while the best period for tour and trek is from June to October. Most of the trekking routes are closed after November due to heavy snowfall at high passes except the Liker to Kahltsey (Sham) trek. The best period for Chadar trek is from January to Mid-March. The festivals of Stok, Matho and New Year take place in winter. It is possible to visit monasteries in winter, as there are many centrally heated hotels in Leh.

Things to buy:

The markets in Leh are flooded with plenty of local stuff especially during the peak tourist season of June to September. The famous things that comprise a part of shopping list for Leh Ladakh for most travellers range from Pashmina Shawls, native handicrafts, rugs and carpets to woollens and traditional silver jewellery.

What to do:

Magnetic Hill
Magnetic Hill is a gravity hill located near Leh. The hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference; in reality, the effect is an optical illusion created by the gravity hill.

Leh Palace
Leh Palace was built during the 17th century by the ruler King Sengge Namgyal. Its construction is on the same lines as the construction of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. This palace had to be deserted by the royal family in the middle of the 19th century, because of the taking over of Ladakh by Dogra forces. After this the royal family is living in-exile in the popular Stok Palace. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is restoring some of the ruined portions of this nine-storey palace. While the store rooms were on the lower floors, the royalty resided on the upper floors. The roof of this palace offers an excellent view of the valley.

Tiger Hill
Placed at an elevation of 5,353meters, Tiger Hill in Drass Valley is is a strategically important mountain peak overlooking National Highway 1D, serving as a gateway to Siachen Glacier and connecting Leh to Srinagar.
Tiger Hill shot into prominence after the major battle took place to take back the peak from the Pakistani Army who captured it in 1999. In fact, the battle for recapture of Tiger Hill or the 'Point 4660' is considered to be one of the most important battles waged by the Indian army against the Pakistani army during the Kargil War in 1999.

Stok Palace
Stok Palace, built by King Tsespal Tondup Namgyal in 1825, in the present times is the residential palace of the royal descendants of King Sengge Namgyal. The architecture of this palace is a perfect mix of the traditional and the contemporary architectural styles. This palatial property consists of a number of beautiful gardens as well as a library that has around 108 volumes of the Kangyur (a collection of teachings of Lord Buddha). The palace is located around 15 kms away from the main city of Leh.
This palace hosts an annual dance-mask festival in which there is a huge participation by the locals. There is also a collection of royal clothing, crowns and other important things which you can see while on the excursion of the palace.

Excursions

Tangtse
Tangtse village on Leh- Pangong Tso road. Tangtse lies on the valley floor through which the Harong stream flows. Surrounded by mountains, the village lies on flat arid ground with greenery to be seen only along the Harong stream.

Changla pass
The Chang La is a high mountain pass in Ladakh. It is the third highest motorable road in the world. The Chang La is on the route to Pangong Lake from Leh. The name literally means "Pass towards the South" or "Pass in the South" (Chang = south, La = Pass). It is falsely claimed that the pass is named after the supposed sadhu Changla Baba, a myth propagated by the dedication of a temple at the pass to the supposed Changla Baba.

Pangong Tso Lake
A wonderful destination, Pangong Tso Lake is a very famous lake in the state and acts as a significant propagation ground for multiplicity of birds including numerous migratory birds. The Brahmini ducks and Bar-headed goose are frequently seen here during the time of summer season. The area around the lake acts as the support system for various kinds of species of wildlife such as the Marmot and the Kiang. The salty water of the lake makes micro-vegetation very low hence there are no fish or other aqueous life in the lake, excluding small crustaceans. Tourists can see many ducks and gulls over and on the lake surface.

Language:

The Ladakhi language , also called Bhoti, is the predominant language in the Leh district of Ladakh, India. Ladakhi is a Tibetic language, but is not mutually intelligible with Standard Tibetan.

Food:

You must try Chutagi- the most famous and signature dish of Ladakh, Skew, Paba, Momo, Thukpa, Tapu.
