Volunteer on an organic farm in northern Thailand

  • Learn the techniques of natural farming according to the permaculture principles
  • Enjoy delicious farm grown foods
  • Meet like-minded people
  • Enjoy the wonderful nature of the Thung Chang district
  • Minimum stay is 5 nights or longer

Our farm is located in the northern part of Thailand between green hills as far as the eye can see and surrounded by nature. We want to maintain a sustainable and basic way of living.

We live a simple life and our accommodation is basic so don't expect any luxury. We have a bamboo and mud-building farmstay and serve organic vegetarian food.

Currently we produce cashew nuts, rambutan, avocado, banana, papaya, mango, jackfruit, tamarind, bamboo, teak wood, longkong, vegetable gardens, and many more. Our goal is to be an educational center and example for organic farming. We would like to inspire and help the local people around us to not use the conventional chemical monoculture planting.

We are looking for more manpower and volunteers to help us on our farm. You can help with farm work such as planting trees, coffee, herbs, preparing rice fields, vegetable gardens, seed nursery, harvesting, food storage and production or spreading and sharing the permaculture way to the local people.

You will receive three meals a day and a place to sleep. The meals are vegetarian—usually rice from the farm or nearby market, served with vegetables, fruits and herbs harvested in the land. Accommodation is basic. We have several open-air bamboo huts, each containing a large mattress pad, bedspread, mosquito net and some string for hanging your clothes. The shower is coming from a pipe and is cold.

We normally start working at around 8 or 9 am until 12 pm after which lunch is served. Then we work some more between 2 and 5 pm. We don't have any lights so around 6 pm it is getting dark. You need to have a flashlight or head light.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring along own notes and stationeries, sleeping bag, flashlight, organic soap, sensible clothing, hat, footwear, own towel, tissue papers, and personal medicine.

Anyone who loves to contribute or want to learn is more than welcome. Come and join us!

Children below 6 years old are half the price per kid per day. You can pay this on location and only book for adults.

What is included:

  • Accommodation
  • Three Meals per day

We are located in Thung Chang District in the far north of Nan Province, Thailand. Here is the easiest way to get to the farm.

From Nan

If you are in the Nan town you can take the red bus in the Nan Bus Station. From Nan to Thung Chang is around 2 to 3 hours, 70km. These red buses travel every hour starting from 6am to 6pm. If you are in Nan Airport, you can walk (1km) from the airport to the main road and wait for the red bus at the opposite side of the road (to north direction), this means you do not have to go into Nan town (south direction) again.

For flights that arrive at Nan airport quite late, you have to be fast to catch the last red bus of 6pm, otherwise you might have to stay overnight in Nan town, and take the red bus the next day. Please tell your transport driver to drop you at Seven-Eleven shop in Thung Chang. **When you exist the Nan Airport building, that is not the main road yet, you have to go to the right and it walk about 5-10 minutes to arrive at the main road.

From Chiang Mai

About 5~8 hours by own transport, 350km. If you take the "Green Bus" from Arkhid Bus Station to Thung Chang, it will take about 7-9 hours. It is important to buy the "Green Bus" ticket one or two days in advance, because it is always being sold out. Please tell your transport driver to drop you at Seven-Eleven shop in Thung Chang.

From Chiang Rai

5-8 hours by own transport. For public transport, you have to arrive at the main bus station in Chiang Rai before 8.30 am to buy the ticket on the spot, the bus will leave Chiang Rai at 9.30am. and there is only one trip per day. From Chiang Rai Bus Station, you take the bus (usually you cannot book this ticket in advance) which is heading to Nan, BUT you can drop yourself in Tha Wang Pha (a town which is 1 hour from Nan town), this means you do not have to go to the center of Nan town. in Tha Wang Pha, you can take the red bus (one trip every hour) north up to Thung Chang. Please tell your transport driver to drop you at Seven-Eleven shop in Thung Chang. Usually our volunteer will arrive then before 6pm.

From Bangkok

About 10-12 hours by bus from Mochit Bus Station, 750km. In Mochit Bus Station, there are 3 bus companies that you can choose, which are 999 transport company, Sombatt tour company, and Chertchai tour company. Sombatt tour and 999 transport company will stop in Bang Chak gas station in Thung Chang, we can pick you there. But for Cherchai company buses you have to inform the driver to drop you at the Seven-Eleven shop, or you can also stop at Cherchai company bus station. There are also domestic flights from "NOK AIR" and "AIR ASIA" available from Bangkok to Nan.

From Laos

1 hour, 50km. More trips if there is demand (usually Saturdays, when Huay Kon border market is open). Our volunteers like to have their Visa Run here. There are vans from Huay Khon boarder going to Nan direction, you can take these vans and drop at Seven-Eleven shop in Thung Chang.

*There are some bus station which write "Thung Chang" as "Tung Chang", "Tung Cang", "Thungchang", or "Thung Cang", bear in mind that they are the same place with only different spelling.

*Please ask the ticket counter properly that you are heading to Thung Chang(more north than Nan city), not just Nan city. Please double check your bus ticket and make sure that you are dropping at Thung Chang, not Nan city. We have many volunteers who bought the wrong ticket and ended up dropping themselves at Nan which is still 70km from our farm. In this case, you will have to take the local red bus again to Thung Chang.

*Please kindly inform us about your arrival time and date one or two days before your arrival.

*Domestic flights are available from Bangkok to Nan, and from Chiang Mai to Nan.

*Travelling time is depending on the transport and traffic situation.

*For convenience, if you take Greenbus company or Cherchai tour company buses, please tell your transport driver to drop you at Seven-Eleven shop in Thung Chang (there is only one Seven-Eleven here). And then you can sit down on chair and wait for us at Pee Wan Dee Shop which is opposite Seven-Eleven. Also, please let us know that you have arrive.

*If we are too busy and not convenient to pick you up from the town, we will arrange transport to pick you and it will charge you for 100 Bath per trip

our farm community

Enjoy your trip with our farm community

We are people from the Lua tribe and we started this farm in this part of Thailand after heavy conflicts between communists and the democrats in 1967 after we had to flee and got this piece of land from the government. We started to use this land, as was taught us by our tribe. A few years ago we found out that our traditional practices are actually the same idea as the permaculture philosophy, a way of working with, rather than against nature. We want to maintain a sustainable and way of living. Anyone who loves to contribute or want to learn is more than welcome!

The stay at the farm was a nice experience i won't miss. Shen and Sandot are kind persons with a lot of knowledge about farming, permaculture and cooking. No two days work were the same, so i learned a lot and there are also some events held in the village that you and the other volunteers can join. The farm life was not luxury at all but i expected a simple life in nature and got along well with this situation. In the end it is possible to charge the phone and use the light of the phone instead of a headlight but i recommend to bring own organic Shampoo (it is possible to buy organic soap for little money from Shen). Best part was definitly Shens food and to have a break of busy and touristic city life! So i would stay there again and next time for longer :)

My time at the farm this spring was hands down the best experience I had during my time in Thailand. It was great to volunteer with people from all over the world. We worked, ate and learned together, in the end creating one of those tight bonds I only feel with people I've known for years or have gone camping with. Shen and Sandot are full of so much knowledge, what I leaned from them during my two weeks there was only scraping the surface. I encourage anyone thinking of volunteering to jump on a bus immediately and head over to their small haven.

It was such an inspirational time. So much more then we can write in words. Living by nature opened our eyes truly.  And our feelings - to live with the nature, feel the breathing of the trees. The wind. The soil between our toes. The natural shampoo we helped making. The homemade and handmade soy milk, rice milk mixed with sesam milk. And working in the fields.   The sounds of nature and the way of living by day and night. Feeling united with the surroundings.  We did the project with the three of us - my 4-year-old daughter, my boyfriend, and myself. In the beginning - she missed her dolls. And seemed to be a bit out of control. Out of balance. She said: my dresses are getting dirty and I don't like that. I like hot water showers instead of cold water baskets. And I miss muesli and yoghurt. After a while - she pulled herself together and in the same time pulled off her shoes. She yelled: this is so much better! It' s great to feel the soil between my toes! She wasn' t complaining at all. She began to love the nature. And our way of living by nature. The way of living by day and night. The plants. The trees. The animals. The other children. She loved it all*. Thanks so much Shen and Sandot! Your family and farm is so welcoming and great!!! ✨

We arrived in Thung Chang, Nan late after Sandot (owner of the farm) helped coordinate with us transportation from bangkok (taking the bus from Mochit Bus Station) directly to Thung Chang, Nan. Sandot was prompt with emails and veery helpful helping us find a place to stay for the night before we arrived at his farm, and picking us up the morning of arrival. Getting to Sandot's farm felt so home-coming. His wife and son were so warm and kind and we knew we would feel at home immediately. Other volunteers came through during our stay and there was plenty of accommodations for everybody. We each were welcomed to choosing our own huts anywhere on the property and it was fun to see the different perks each hut offered. Our stay at the farm was definitely the highlight of our Thailand trip. We woke to the birds and sun and waited for the breakfast call each morning before we headed to the main house to join the others for a warm meal. Meals were delicious and abundant in size and there was always plenty to go around. We all helped with the dishes or taking down the food to the eating place and after a full meal we dove in to whatever we needed to do on the farm. Some days it meant harvesting rice with other locals, one day we helped add a few feet of bamboo roofing and one day we even learned to make our own bamboo spoons and cups. Each day was filled with new knowledge and whatever the farm was experiencing at the time. We learned about creating coal from burning specific sized wood in a barrel, we learned to use ash to clean oily pans and dishes and most importantly we learned from all of the other guests about their backgrounds and cultures. Staying at the farm was the most simple-life experience my girlfriend and I have had the pleasure of having. We lived in the jungle and felt so safe and at home. We learned the ways of simple living and getting back to our roots of, home-cooked meals and sharing with others. The accommodations served our purpose and surprisingly provided electrical outlets for our cameras and drone as well as ample space for our luggage. We slept in mosquito nets and mattresses provided by the farm. We brought our own toilet paper which we recommend to anyone who appreciates this luxury, and we used our own towel that we let hang dry every day after showers. The farm had running water and clean drinking water as well. Ample food and fruits and an assortment of things to keep one busy or to learn about. Cute Cats running around made us feel at home (and even safe at night as they 'walked' us back to our huts after our meals). Our day to day routine was very simple with three meals and an afternoon time to rest or relax. We never went without, and if we had any questions or needs to get to town Sandot was very accommodating. We highly recommend this stay to anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle or unwind in to the natural wilderness for a few days or even longer. Many guests stayed long amounts of times and we were sad to leave this home away from home. If you are planning on visiting, email Sandot and he can help you coordinate transportation and arrivals. It is best to get there when it is light out so you can set up your hut and organize your belongings before the night time. We really enjoyed this place and everything the farm offered from the freshest, healthiest meals, to the most authentic Thai culture. The knowledge and love we took home from this stay will last a life-time. 5 Stars and we will definitely love to return!
